Introduction to the BIS QCO for the Six Chemicals
The BIS Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for Lauric Acid, Acid Oil, Palm Fatty Acids, Rice Bran Fatty Acids, Coconut Fatty Acids, as well as Hydrogenated Rice Bran Fatty Acids, were introduced by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers in order to ensure consistent quality, safety, and absolute reliability of these widely used industrial chemicals.
These chemicals are commonly used in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, food processing, and various other industrial applications. The QCOs were considered necessary to prevent the use of substandard materials, protect end users, and ensure that only products meeting Indian Standards are supplied in the domestic market for sales and purchase.
Key changes you should know
- An earlier extension order for these six chemicals was issued on 7 March 2024.
- As per that order, the QCO was scheduled to be enforced on 22 October 2024.
- A new Quality Control Amendment Order has now been issued on 22 October 2024.
- The implementation date for these QCOs has been further extended.
- BIS certification will remain mandatory once the QCO comes into force.
- Products that are manufactured only for export purposes continue to remain exempt from the provisions of this Order.
