ISI / BIS Certification for Malleable cast iron pipe fittings

Get BIS Certification for Malleable cast iron pipe fittings IS 1879:2010 By Brand Liaison
ISI / BIS Certification is mandatory for

Malleable cast iron pipe fittings

IS Standard : IS 1879:2010

Malleable cast iron pipe fittings are highly valued for their longevity, adaptability, and simplicity of installation; they are crucial parts of fluid transportation and plumbing systems. The strength and durability of cast iron are combined with the malleability and ductility of wrought iron to create malleable cast iron, which is used to make these fittings. Because of its special mix of qualities, malleable cast iron is the best material for a variety of plumbing applications. Because of its exceptional pressure resistance, malleable cast iron pipe fittings are appropriate for use in gas, water, and air distribution systems. Their resilience to elevated temperatures and fluctuating pressures guarantees dependable and impermeable connections.

Comprehensive guidelines and criteria for the production of malleable cast iron pipe fittings are provided by IS 1879:2010. By following these guidelines, manufacturers may reliably make high-quality fittings, minimizing errors and guaranteeing the dependability of their products. Adherence to IS 1879:2010 guarantees that the fixtures fulfill safety and long-term stability standards, diminishing the possibility of leaks, malfunctions, and possible dangers. This standard describes the requirements that apply to different kinds of IS 554-threaded malleable cast iron pipe fittings. As explained in more depth in the following sections, these fittings are designed to be used generally for the conveyance of fluids and gases within the specified pressure and temperature limits:

  • Section 1: General
  • Section 2: Elbows, including twin elbows, union elbows and side outlet elbows
  • Section 3: Tees including pitcher tees and side outlet tees
  • Section 4: Crosses
  • Section 5: Bends including long sweep bends and return bends
  • Section 6: Sockets
  • Section 7: Bushing and hexagon nipples
  • Section 8: Backnuts
  • Section 9: Caps and plugs
  • Section 10: Unions

Certain factors are left to the manufacturer's determination depending on the intended application of the fittings, as the standard does not prescribe their size. As long as the temperature stays below 100°C, these fittings should be able to resist operating pressures of up to 1.4 MPa for water and up to 0.7 MPa for steam, air, gas, and oil.

Note: The mandatory ISI Mark Certification must be obtained by manufacturers of malleable cast iron pipe fittings.

An essential step in ensuring that these fittings meet strict safety requirements, technical standards, and quality standards is ISI Certification. This certification enhances the dependability and efficiency of the plumbing and fluid conveyance systems in which these fittings are used. It guarantees that the pipe fittings plumbers, contractors, and end users utilize in their systems and projects are of the best caliber, guaranteeing the effectiveness and dependability of plumbing solutions and fluid conveyance.

About ISI / BIS Certification

Indian Standards Institute, or ISI was renamed the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 1987. The official mark that the Bureau of Indian Standards provides for manufacturers of various goods is the ISI Mark. It is used to indicate compliance with Indian standards (IS) set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and has been used as a conformity marking for industrial products. Manufacturers received permission from BIS to use the ISI Mark on items that comply with relevant Indian requirements through the product certification program.

Only manufacturers (domestic or foreign) who produce the finished product will be awarded ISI Certification. This will not be given to any product importers, traders, dealers, or distributors.

Documents Required for ISI / BIS Certification

The following documentation is required to get an ISI certification:

  • Main Application Form V
  • Address Proof of Manufacturing Unit
  • Details of Manufacturing Process
  • Test Report of products

Process of ISI / BIS Certification

There are two approaches for Indian manufacturers to become certified with the ISI Mark:

  • Regular Procedure
  • Simplified Procedure

Regular Procedure

With the possible exception of cases deemed "All India first," which might take up to 180 days, the licensing procedure is expected to be finished in 120 days. This timeline starts on the day the application is received, assuming that at different points in time the documentation, unit assessment, and product conformance are all deemed acceptable.

Step 1: Manufacturing Unit Customization in Compliance with Applicable Indian Standards

  • Identifying the applicable Indian Standard
  • Establishing in-house testing facilities as per the Standard's requirements

Step 2: Submission of the Application Form

  • Preparing an Internal Test Report for the product by the relevant Indian Standard
  • Compiling all necessary documents
  • Completing the Online Application Form
  • Online payment of application fees directly to BIS
  • Submitting hard copies of the Application Form with all enclosures to the relevant Branch Office (BO) of BIS

Simplified Procedure

This is a much faster process than the standard procedure. After a factory inspection is deemed satisfactory and the initial evaluation establishes that the sample complies with the applicable Indian Standard(s), the license application process is expected to be finished in 30 days.

Step 1: Adapting the Manufacturing Unit to Comply with the Relevant Indian Standard

  • Identifying the applicable Indian Standard
  • Establishing in-house testing facilities to meet the Standard's requirements

Step 2: Sample Testing

  • Obtaining the necessary certificate for raw materials (Material Test Certificate - MTC)
  • Conducting product sample testing at a BIS-recognized testing laboratory
