Gypsum plaster boards – Specification: Part 1 plain gypsum plaster boards

IS Standard : IS 2095 (Part 1):2011

Plain gypsum plaster boards, also known as gypsum wallboards or drywall, are versatile construction materials widely used in interior wall and ceiling applications. These boards consist of a gypsum core sandwiched between two layers of paper or fiberglass, providing strength, rigidity, and fire resistance. Plain gypsum plaster boards are lightweight and easy to install, making them popular choices for both residential and commercial construction projects. They offer excellent sound insulation properties, improving acoustic comfort within buildings. These plaster boards provide a smooth and seamless surface that is ideal for painting, wallpapering, or applying decorative finishes. Their versatility, affordability, and ease of installation make plain gypsum plaster boards a preferred choice for interior partitioning, lining, and finishing in modern construction.

IS 2095 (Part 1):2011 is an important standard in ensuring the quality and safety of plain gypsum plaster boards, which are essential materials used in interior construction for applications such as wall partitions and ceilings. This standard serves as a crucial guideline for manufacturers, specifying specific requirements for raw materials, manufacturing processes, dimensions, and physical properties of gypsum plaster boards. Adhering to IS 2095 (Part 1):2011 ensures that manufacturers produce boards meeting stringent quality benchmarks, guaranteeing their durability, stability, and fire resistance in various building applications. Compliance with this standard not only ensures the structural integrity of interior constructions but also promotes safety by regulating factors such as moisture resistance and dimensional stability. IS 2095 (Part 1):2011 fosters consistency and uniformity in the production of plain gypsum plaster boards, facilitating their seamless integration into construction projects while ensuring compatibility and reliability.

Note: Obtaining the ISI/BIS Certification is a mandatory requirement for manufacturers of Plain gypsum plaster boards - Specification - Part 1 to sell their products in the Indian market.

In India, manufacturers are required to obtain ISI/BIS certification for their Plain Gypsum Plaster Boards to legally sell these products. This certification, mandated by Indian regulations, ensures compliance with specific quality and safety standards established by the BIS for the production and distribution of plain gypsum plaster boards. Without this certification, manufacturers face legal consequences and obstacles in accessing the Indian market. Securing ISI/BIS certification is not only a regulatory necessity but also a crucial step for manufacturers to demonstrate the reliability, durability, and safety of their plain gypsum plaster boards. This certification process underscores the importance of ensuring the integrity and quality of construction materials, instilling confidence among stakeholders in the construction and building industries regarding its compliance with Indian standards for usage and distribution.

About ISI / BIS Certification

Indian Standards Institute, or ISI was renamed the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 1987. The official mark that the Bureau of Indian Standards provides for manufacturers of various goods is the ISI Mark. It is used to indicate compliance with Indian standards (IS) set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and has been used as a conformity marking for industrial products. Manufacturers received permission from BIS to use the ISI Mark on items that comply with relevant Indian requirements through the product certification program.

Only manufacturers (domestic or foreign) who produce the finished product will be awarded ISI Certification. This will not be given to any product importers, traders, dealers, or distributors.

Documents Required for ISI / BIS Certification

The following documentation is required to get an ISI certification:

  • Main Application Form V
  • Address Proof of Manufacturing Unit
  • Details of Manufacturing Process
  • Test Report of products

Process of ISI / BIS Certification

There are two approaches for Indian manufacturers to become certified with the ISI Mark:

  • Regular Procedure
  • Simplified Procedure

Regular Procedure

With the possible exception of cases deemed "All India first," which might take up to 180 days, the licensing procedure is expected to be finished in 120 days. This timeline starts on the day the application is received, assuming that at different points in time the documentation, unit assessment, and product conformance are all deemed acceptable.

Step 1: Manufacturing Unit Customization in Compliance with Applicable Indian Standards

  • Identifying the applicable Indian Standard
  • Establishing in-house testing facilities as per the Standard's requirements

Step 2: Submission of the Application Form

  • Preparing an Internal Test Report for the product by the relevant Indian Standard
  • Compiling all necessary documents
  • Completing the Online Application Form
  • Online payment of application fees directly to BIS
  • Submitting hard copies of the Application Form with all enclosures to the relevant Branch Office (BO) of BIS

Simplified Procedure

This is a much faster process than the standard procedure. After a factory inspection is deemed satisfactory and the initial evaluation establishes that the sample complies with the applicable Indian Standard(s), the license application process is expected to be finished in 30 days.

Step 1: Adapting the Manufacturing Unit to Comply with the Relevant Indian Standard

  • Identifying the applicable Indian Standard
  • Establishing in-house testing facilities to meet the Standard's requirements

Step 2: Sample Testing

  • Obtaining the necessary certificate for raw materials (Material Test Certificate - MTC)
  • Conducting product sample testing at a BIS-recognized testing laboratory
