BIS / CRS Registration for Set Top Box (STB)

Set Top Box (STB)
BIS / CRS is mandatory for

Set Top Box (STB)

IS Standard : IS 13252(Part 1):2010

A set-top box is a piece of hardware used to receive, interpret, and show digital signals on a TV. These signals are usually transmitted by cable or phone connections and can come from sources such as internet data or television broadcasts. A set-top box provides access to a wide range of television channels, services, and interactive features by acting as a mediator between a television and different content sources. To enable viewing on conventional television sets, these devices convert digital television signals into an analog format. As an alternative, they make it possible to receive television broadcasts from cable or satellite. In the beginning, set-top boxes were mostly utilized for cable and satellite TV services, providing a wider selection of channels than the typical channel numbering schemes seen in most televisions.

Set-top boxes come in a variety of forms, from simple devices that receive and decode incoming audio-visual signals to sophisticated systems that provide a broad range of functions, such as IP telephony, video on demand, home networking, video conferencing, and satellite broadband TV services. Because they give users access to a vast range of interactive features and information, these boxes are frequently utilized in households and workplaces to improve the television-watching experience. They have changed throughout time to account for the transition from traditional broadcasting to the delivery of material via the Internet and digital platforms.

The market for STBs is expected to grow as consumers' needs for interactive features and high-definition content increase. Moreover, promising markets in nations with rising disposable incomes, such as China and India, present significant growth opportunities. The global set-top box market was valued at USD 23.98 billion in 2022, and it is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.0% between 2023 and 2030.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mandates the registration of set-top boxes under the Indian BIS CRS Registration.

Set-top boxes must be registered in line with IS 13252(Part-1):2010 as part of the BIS-introduced Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) on July 3, 2013. It is against the law to manufacture, trade, or sell set-top boxes in India without a current BIS CRS Registration.
