Exceptions for Safety Glass Quality Control Amendment Order 2023

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has issued the Safety Glass (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2023. This order mandates that Safety Glass must comply with the relevant Indian Standard and bear the ISI mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, in accordance with Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. It prohibits the production, trading, stocking, or importing of Safety Glass unless it bears the ISI Mark. The effective date for the implementation of this order is March 24, 2023.

However, the order includes certain exceptions:

It does not apply to the import of safety glass by vehicle manufacturers for the production of up to 10,000 vehicles manufactured in India per financial year.

It does not apply to the import of up to 5,000 units of safety glass per financial year for the purpose of repairs or after-sales service of vehicles.

This regulatory measure aims to ensure the quality and safety of Safety Glass in the market, fostering standardized practices to benefit consumers and the industry.
