Cast Iron Products Quality Control Order Notification for Micro and Small Enterprises

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has recently issued the "Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023," aimed at regulating the quality standards of various cast iron products in India. This order, set to take effect six months from its publication date, mandates strict adherence to specified Indian Standards. Products such as cast iron manhole covers, drainage pipes and fittings, malleable cast iron pipe fittings, sluice gates, grey iron castings, and vertically cast iron pressure pipes must comply with standards such as IS 1726:1991, IS 1729:2002, IS 1879:2010, IS 13349:1992, IS 210:2009, and IS 1537:1976, respectively. Manufacturers are required to affix the ISI Mark on compliant products, signifying conformity to these stringent quality benchmarks. Under this directive, manufacturers falling under the category of Micro and Small Enterprises, as defined by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, have distinct compliance timelines. Small Enterprises must ensure compliance within nine months from the publication date, whereas Micro Enterprises have twelve months. This regulatory initiative is part of the government's broader effort to bolster consumer safety and enhance product reliability by enforcing rigorous quality control measures. Manufacturers are also obligated to obtain a license under Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Non-compliance with these regulations may result in penalties as per the provisions outlined in the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. By implementing these measures, the government aims to uphold industry standards, safeguard consumer interests, and foster confidence in the quality of Cast Iron Products available in the market.
