Introduction to the BIS QCO Regarding Air Conditioners and Related Parts

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, has issued a clarification regarding Air Conditioners and its related Parts, Hermetic Compressors, and Temperature Sensing Controls. This clarification amends the principal Air Conditioner and its related Parts, Hermetic Compressor and Temperature Sensing Controls (Quality Control) Order, 2019, which was originally published on 5th December 2019.

The new order is titled the Air Conditioner and its related Parts, Hermetic Compressor and Temperature Sensing Controls (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2025.

This clarification aims to provide important updates for manufacturers of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, enabling them to make informed decisions in the Indian market while remaining compliant with BIS regulations.

Key Changes of the QCO You Should Know

As per this clarification:

• The QCO shall not apply to Hermetic Compressors of more than 7000 W (2TR) capacity for one year from the date of commencement of this Amendment Order.
• This exemption applies to manufacturers of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and related parts.
• All other provisions of the 2019 QCO remain unchanged and continue to apply.

This amendment allows manufacturers to plan production and procurement without non-compliance issues for high-capacity Hermetic Compressors during the specified period.

What is the Date of Implementation?

The Air Conditioner and its related Parts, Hermetic Compressor and Temperature Sensing Controls (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2025 comes into force from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, i.e., 11th February 2025.

The exemption for Hermetic Compressors of more than 7000 W (2TR) capacity is valid for one year from this date.
