Introduction

Refined zinc ingots are widely used in galvanizing, die casting, alloys, batteries, construction, as well as several engineering applications, where chemical purity and material consistency directly influence product performance. Because of their industrial importance, quality control is essential throughout the manufacturing and supply chain.

In India, refined zinc is covered under IS 209:2024 - Refined Zinc - Specification, which basically specifies requirements for different grades of refined zinc. For products that are covered under the applicable Quality Control Order, manufacturers must obtain the required BIS certification before supplying them in the Indian market.

For zinc manufacturers, importers, as well as businesses that are dealing in refined zinc ingots, understanding the applicable grade, chemical composition, testing, BIS certification process, as well as documentation is essential for maintaining regulatory compliance and avoiding disruptions in supply. This guide explains the key BIS requirements for refined zinc ingots, the certification process, testing requirements, and important compliance considerations for the Indian market.

Refined Zinc Ingots (IS 209:2024)

Refined Zinc is used for diverse applications in the market and is a major aspect in various industries such as galvanization, construction, chemical industries, automotive sectors, roofing and cladding purposes, etc. These have to abide by the prescribed BIS certification as per IS 209:2024 in order to stay compliant and legally eligible for the Indian market.

What is BIS Certification for Refined Zinc Ingots?

The BIS certification is a mandatory compliance requirement for the notified products being sold or imported in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) grants the ISI mark license after testing the products on several parameters like quality and long-term reliability. Only upon being satisfied that the products meet the standards and benchmarks specified by the Indian market, the BIS-ISI certificate is granted to the products, rendering them compliant to be sold, manufactured, and imported in the Indian market. It is a legal compliance requirement, and not following the same can lead to various fines and penalties, which will hamper business growth and market reputation.

Specifications of Refined Zinc Ingots (IS 209:2024)

This standard covers the requirements for refined zinc in the form of ingots. The grades of zinc that are included in the standard are those which are recognized nationally and in worldwide Commerce. This standard covers five grades of refined zinc ingots, designated as follows, in accordance with minimum zinc content in each grade:

  • Zn99.995;
  • Zn99.99;
  • Zn99.95;
  • Zn99.5;
  • Zn98.65
  • Zinc ingots shall be manufactured from liquid refined zinc by continuous or non-continuous technique.
  • The shape and Size of the Ingot shall be as per the agreement between purchaser and supplier.
  • The surface of the ingots shall be reasonably free of surface corrosion and adhering foreign matter.
  • The chemical composition of the Ingots shall be as per the limit specified in the Indian standard.
  • All ingots or bundles of ingots shall be marked, or labelled, with the following minimum information, unless specifically agreed otherwise by the producer and user:
    • The cast/lot number;
    • The grade of the material;
    • Indication of source of manufacture that is the name or trademark of manufacturer; and
    • The mass of an ingot or bundle.
  • This standard does not cover the requirements of re-melted secondary zinc produced by ‘sweating’ or ‘remelting’ of secondary zinc-bearing materials.

Understanding BIS Quality Control Order for Refined Zinc

The BIS has recently issued a Quality Control Order for refined zinc, which will be called the Refined Zinc (Quality Control) Order, 2025. As per this QCO, the refined zinc ingots have to bear the ISI mark under a license by the Bureau and should conform to the specified IS 209:2024. Moreover, it is important to note that the date of implementation for this Quality Control Order is after 6 months from its publication in the official gazette.

What is the process to get a BIS Certificate for Refined Zinc Ingots?

There are several easy steps involved in the procedure of gaining a BIS license for refined zinc Ingots as per IS 209:2024 in the Indian market:

  1. The application has to be submitted on the official BIS Manakonlie portal along with all the detailed specifications as asked for.
  2. The required documents have to be gathered and updated with the application form to streamline the entire process in a hassle-free manner.
  3. After document submission, the BIS officials will inspect the factory premises and view the standardization procedures and manufacturing processes that businesses are following.
  4. The product samples will then be tested and rigorously verified in the BIS-accredited laboratories, the test reports of which will have to be submitted.
  5. The required fees will have to be submitted on the BIS portal.
  6. After successfully verifying the product samples and the authenticity of the documents and other requirements, the BIS will grant the BIS ISI certification for refined zinc ingots (IS 209:2024).

It is important to note that the BIS certification process differs for foreign and Indian manufacturers. Foreign manufacturers have to apply under the BIS FMCS type and get the ISI mark and appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) to proceed with the same.
