Introduction to the BIS QCO for Aluminium & Aluminium Alloys
The Ministry of Mines had earlier notified the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023 under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, with the objective of regulating the quality of aluminium and aluminium alloy products placed in the Indian market. The 2023 Order mandated compulsory conformity to the relevant Indian Standards and the use of the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid BIS licence.
However, in order to revise the enforcement timeline and bring clarity on the effective date, the Central Government has now issued the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024.
Key Changes You Need to Know
Through the Gazette Notification dated 03 May 2024, the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024, introduces the following important changes:
- It will be called the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024.
- The amendment modifies the commencement timeline of the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order, 2023
- The earlier enforcement timelines are replaced with a uniform effective date.
- Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys must conform to the applicable Indian Standards and bear the ISI Mark to ensure legal compliance.
- Certification is mandatory under Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
- The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) continues to be the certifying and enforcing authority for ensuring legal adherence to this QCO amendment.
What is the Date of Implementation?
As per the amendment, the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order shall now come into force with effect from 01 December 2024.
Manufacturers and importers must ensure that all covered products fully comply with the notified Indian Standards and BIS certification requirements on or before this date in order to avoid regulatory action.
