BIS Scheme-XNew BIS Amendment 2025 for Electrical Equipment Under Scheme X

BIS Scheme-X
Issue Date: 05-05-2025
Introduction to the BIS (Quality Control) Order, 2025 for Electrical Equipment Under Scheme X
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has issued a new notification on 5th May, 2025, regarding the extension of the implementation timeline under the Electrical Equipment (Quality Control) Second Amendment Order, 2024.
Earlier, under the Electrical Equipment (Quality Control) Second Amendment Order, 2024, published on 3rd May 2024, the date of implementation for certain electrical equipment categories was 10th May 2025.
This extension gives additional time to manufacturers and importers to obtain BIS certification under Scheme X and comply with the applicable Indian Standards.
Key Changes of the QCO You Should Know
The extension applies to the following electrical equipment categories:
- Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: Circuit–Breakers (IS/IEC 60947: Part 2: 2016)
Category: AC Circuit - Breakers (Category - A)- All ratings above 630A, up to 440V AC - Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: Circuit–Breakers (IS/IEC 60947: Part 2: 2016)
Category: AC Circuit Breakers (Category -B)- All ratings up to 2000 A, up to 440V AC - Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: switches, disconnectors, switch disconnectors, and fuse-combination units (IS/IEC 60947: Part 3: 2020)
Category: All AC utilization categories up to 250A, up to 440V AC - Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: electromechanical contactors and motor–starters (IS/IEC 60947: Part 4: Sec 1: 2018)
Category: Contactor -All AC utilization categories up to 32A - Low - Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: a.c. semiconductor motor controllers and starters (IS/IEC 60947: Part 4: Sec 2: 2020)
Category: All types of product ratings - Low - Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: a.c. semiconductor motor controllers and contactors for non-motor loads (IS/IEC 60947: Part 4: Sec 3: 2020)
Category: All types of product ratings - Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: electromechanical control circuit devices (IS/IEC 60947: Part 5: Sec 1: 2016)
Category: All AC utilization categories up to 440V AC - Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear Proximity Switches (IS/IEC 60947: Part 5: Sec 2: 2019)
Category: All types of product ratings - Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: electrical emergency stop devices with mechanical latching function (IS/IEC 60947: Part 5: Sec 5: 2016)
Category: All devices with button-type actuator
Manufacturers must obtain BIS certification under Scheme X within the revised timeline to continue selling these products in India.
What is the Date of Implementation?
The revised implementation date for the specified product categories is:
10th November, 2025
This replaces the earlier deadline of 10th May, 2025, and provides a six-month extension.
Now, What to Do?
Manufacturers and importers of the specified electrical equipment should:
- Check whether their products fall under the listed categories
- Review the applicable IS/IEC 60947 standards
- Start or complete the BIS certification process under Scheme X
- Arrange for required testing and documentation
- Ensure certification is obtained before 10th November, 2025
Timely action will help avoid penalties and ensure continued market access in India.
