Introduction to the BIS QCO of Laboratory Glassware

Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has published the Laboratory Glassware (Quality Control) Order, 2023 under Section 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the authority that mandates certification for laboratory glassware. BIS maintains the safety, quality, and performance of the products that are regulated in the Indian market.

The BIS certification of laboratory glassware is mandatory under the Laboratory Glassware (Quality Control) Order, 2023, to ensure the quality of the products, their compliance with the Indian Standards, and their usefulness in laboratories. The products subject to this order need to have the BIS Standard Mark in Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

  • All the laboratory glassware mentioned above should be certified under BIS.
  • The products ought to be of the most recent version of the applicable Indian Standard.
  • The certification required is the BIS certification that is acquired under Scheme-I.
  • This does not apply to goods manufactured domestically exclusively for export.
  • BIS will be the certifying and authoritative body.
  • Any violation of this order would be punishable as provided in the BIS Act, 2016.
