The Ministry of Mines has issued the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order, 2023, to ensure stringent quality standards for Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys in India. This regulatory measure will take effect three months from its publication in the Official Gazette. According to the Order, Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy products must adhere to specific Indian Standards, including:
IS 617:1994 - Cast aluminium and its alloys - Ingots and castings for general engineering purposes
IS 11890:1987 - High purity primary aluminium ingot for remelting for special applications
IS 6754:1972 - Aluminium alloy ingots for remelting for general engineering purposes
IS 2590:1987 - Primary aluminium ingots for remelting for general engineering purposes
IS 4026:2023 - Aluminium ingots, billets, and wire bars (EC GRADE)
Products that meet these standards are required to prominently display the ISI Mark, indicating conformity with the Bureau of Indian Standards requirements under Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. This Order provides an exemption for domestically manufactured Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys intended exclusively for export. The Bureau of Indian Standards is responsible for certifying and enforcing compliance with these quality standards. Non-compliance with the Order's provisions may result in penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This underscores the government's commitment to upholding quality norms and safeguarding consumer interests in the Aluminium industry.
