Introduction to the BIS QCO for Digital Television Receivers

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has recently introduced mandatory compliance for Digital Television Receivers used for satellite broadcast transmission to ensure proper performance, safety, as well as signal reliability.

Digital TVs are widely used across households in India, and this move has been taken to make sure that such products meet uniform technical as well as absolute safety standards. To achieve this, BIS has brought a new Indian Standard under compulsory certification for digital television receivers.

Key changes you should know

  1. BIS has included IS 18112:2022 for Digital Television Receivers for Satellite Broadcast Transmission under mandatory certification.
  2. This requirement has been added under the Electronics and IT Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.
  3. All TV sets must comply with:
    1. IS 18112:2022 for digital satellite free-to-air signals, and
    2. IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014 for safety requirements.
  4. Non-compliance will result in cancellation of BIS licences.
  5. One single licence number will cover both standards and will be shown below the ISI mark.

What is the date of implementation?

  • Final compliance deadline: 25 April 2025
  • Last date to accept new applications under IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014: 25 March 2025

After this date, applications not meeting the updated requirements will be rejected automatically.

Benefits of this Order for the Industry / Businesses

  • Ensures better performance as well as compatibility of digital TV receivers.
  • Improves the safety of television products that are used by consumers.
  • Builds trust in certified digital television equipment.
  • Creates uniform technical standards across the market.
  • Prevents the circulation of non-compliant or unsafe TV products.
  • Supports long-term growth of the electronics industry.

Now, what to do?
