Introduction to the BIS Extension for Revised IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1: 2020
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has recently issued a clarification extending the implementation date for the revised IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1: 2020, which applies to Household and Similar Electrical Appliances.
This clarification has been issued in reference to the earlier guidelines notified on 27th November 2024 and aims to provide additional time to manufacturers and stakeholders to align with the updated safety requirements prescribed under the revised Indian Standard.
Background of the Earlier BIS Notification
The revised IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1: 2020 was introduced to strengthen safety norms for household and similar electrical appliances placed in the Indian market.
As per the earlier BIS circular dated 27 November 2024, the last date of implementation for compliance with the revised standard was 23 February 2025.
Key Changes of the Amendment You Should Know
Based on industry representations and implementation considerations, BIS has now decided to extend the date of implementation of the revised standard.
- Earlier implementation date: 23 February 2025
- Revised implementation date: 23 February 2026
This extension allows manufacturers and importers additional time to complete testing, certification, and compliance activities under the revised IS 302 (Part 1).
What is the Date of Implementation?
The revised IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1: 2020 shall now be mandatory from 23 February 2026.
It is important to note that all other terms, conditions, and provisions specified in the BIS circular dated 27 November 2024 shall remain unchanged and must continue to be followed.
Now, What To Do?
Manufacturers and importers dealing with household and similar electrical appliances should use this extended timeline to:
- Review product designs and safety parameters as per the revised standard
- Complete testing at BIS-recognised laboratories
- Update BIS registration and certification documentation
- Plan a smooth transition before the revised standard becomes mandatory
