BIS Amendment 2026 for Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021

BIS CRS Registration

BIS CRS Registration

Issue Date: 05-05-2026

Introduction to the BIS CRS Amendment for Hard Disk Drives

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had earlier issued the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 under the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). This order basically made BIS registration mandatory for various USB-type external hard disk drives. It meant that the regulation specifically applied to external HDDs that are connected through USB interfaces.

However, through the latest amendment issued on 5 May 2026, the government has expanded the scope of this Indian Standard IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 category. The new BIS QCO 2026 for standalone hard disk drives now broadly covers all standalone HDDs and not just USB-based external drives.

This amendment significantly widens the compliance scope for manufacturers as well as importers who are selling the notified products covered under IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 in the Indian market.

Key Changes You Should Know

  1. The earlier category “USB Type External Hard Disk Drives” has now been Expanded to “Standalone Hard Disk Drives”.
  2. The amendment now expands BIS CRS applicability to a broader range of HDD products.
  3. USB Type External Hard Disk Drives will continue to be regulated under the existing provisions.
  4. All other standalone HDDs will now also require compliance under the BIS CRS framework.
  5. The applicable standard remains eligible for sales and regulation of products - IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 (Information Technology Equipment - Safety Requirements)
