Introduction to the BIS Amendment Notification for Medical Textiles - Bedsheet and Pillow Cover

Indian Standards are periodically updated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which is under the Department of Consumer Affairs, to ensure that the products utilized in such critical industries like healthcare are up to date with the most recent safety, hygiene, and performance parameters. 

BIS has given a medical textile standards amendment notification in accordance with the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2018, under Rule 15 (1).

In the past, the IS 17630:2021 was used to regulate the guidelines of medical textile bedsheets and pillow covers. BIS has set Amendment No. 2 by the notification of 24 June 2024, which gives a set transition period during which the unamended standard would continue to be applicable before the full implementation of the revised requirements.

This amendment notification applies to the following product category:

• Medical Textiles – Bedsheet and Pillow Cover: IS 17630:2021 

Key Provisions of the Notification

1. BIS has formally established Amendment No. 2 to IS 17630:2021.
2. A grace/transition period has been provided to allow manufacturers time to align with revised requirements.
3. After the expiry of the transition period, only products complying with the amended specification will be considered conforming.
4. Existing BIS license holders must ensure their products and documentation are updated in line with the amendment.

• Date of Establishment: 20 June 2024
• Validity of Unamended Standard: Up to 19 September 2024

During this period, products complying with the earlier version of IS 17630:2021 may continue to be manufactured or supplied. After this date, compliance with the amended standard will become mandatory.
