BIS ISI Certification

BIS ISI Certification

Issue Date: 05-08-2024

Introduction to the BIS QCOs on Acetic Acid, Methanol, and Aniline

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers had earlier introduced Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for Acetic Acid, Methanol, and Aniline in order to ensure that these widely used industrial chemicals meet prescribed quality as well as the safety standards before being supplied in the Indian market.

These QCOs made it mandatory for the concerned products to conform to the relevant Indian Standards and obtain BIS certification, with the objective of improving product quality, protecting users, and bringing uniformity in manufacturing practices. Over time, amendments were issued to streamline implementation and give industries time to align with compliance requirements.

Key changes you should know

  1. The Quality Control Amendment Order for Acetic Acid, Methanol, and Aniline was earlier scheduled to come into force on 3rd August 2024.
  2. The Ministry has now issued a new extension order on 5th August 2024.
  3. As per the latest update, the implementation date has been extended by one year.
  4. This extension provides additional time for manufacturers and suppliers to prepare for mandatory BIS compliance.
  5. Non-compliance after the revised date will attract penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

What is the date of implementation?

  • Earlier implementation date: 3rd August 2024
  • Revised implementation date: 3rd August 2025

The Quality Control requirements for Acetic Acid, Methanol, and Aniline will now become mandatory from 3rd August 2025.

Now, what to do?

Manufacturers, importers, as well as suppliers who are dealing with Acetic Acid, Methanol, and Aniline should treat this extension as a preparation window and not a delay in responsibility.

Immediate action points include:

  • Initiating product testing at BIS-recognized laboratories.
  • Applying for BIS certification under Scheme I.
  • Reviewing manufacturing and quality processes to meet BIS norms.
